Rubber in Fashion

  In the beginning, the use of rubber (which  includes natural rubber, many types of synthetic rubbers, silicone rubber, PVC) is  only for small ordinary things such as  rubber bands, rubber gloves, tires, and garden hoses.   Regarding latex, it can be used for prosthetics for Halloween or movies. However, the closest possibility for latex to being worn as clothing were could only be seen in adult clothing. Also, latex is being used for costumes for music videos, movies.   However, these days, Latex as one of the types of rubber has made it into the fashion industry. A quite number of celebrities have been spotted rocking their latex number.  There are a few designers such as Acne Studios to Vetements have been having latex in recent seasons. Rubber-like material PVC Jelly

  As I mentioned in many of my posts, there are natural rubber and synthetic rubber. Moreover, there are a few names of synthetic rubber such as synthetic latex, SBR, and neoprene. On top of that, there are rubber-like materials such as silicone, and jelly rubber.  Jelly rubber is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that has softeners (called phthalates) added to it.  Many of the rubber-like fashion products available on the market are made of this material, such as this shoe Moreover, they are using heavy machinery such as this to produce it. Steps in making silicone items

  STEPS IN MAKING SILICONE PRODUCTS  There are three main steps in making a silicone product, first, you need to make the mold, then cast the silicone using the mold you have just made, and the last step is to paint the silicone product.      This is a video on making a mold out of resin  The next video is on how to cast silicone prosthetic mask /make-up   For those of you who would like to do a DIY silicone item, here is the silicon package found on amazon. Rubber-like material Silicone

Rubber Latex vs Silicone

  If you have seen my previous posts about latex and silicone, you will notice that both of them can be used to make prosthetic. You might be wondering what is the differences between the two.  Based on my experience, latex is cheaper than silicone. Additionally, they are both a two parts packages, meaning there will be part A + part B that have to be mixed together. Rubber in Movies

  As I mentioned before, there are many types of rubber, such as  natural rubber (natural latex), and  many types of synthetic rubbers. Synthetic rubber will include Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), synthetic latex.   Moreover, also can be found rubber-like materials such as silicone rubber, PVC rubber. In movies or music videos, latex usually is used as the material for the costume, such as t he catsuit wore by Michelle Pfeiffer in the 1992 Catwoman movie.   Carrie Anne Moss in the Matrix 1999 Britney Spears in Oops I did it again music video Moreover, latex also can be used for a prosthetic.
